stress fracture brings early end to running season, dashes Pike's Peak plans

I have a stress fracture from the Tulsa Run last weekend. My foot hurt after the race and I thought it might be a stress fracture. By Tuesday it was not too bad so I ran twenty minutes on the treadmill and it felt okay. It still hurt a little, but not much. On Thursday I ran three miles around Boomer, and after that I knew something was wrong. Friday I went to the doctor and it was very visible on the x-ray - the first metatarsal on my right foot. I'm wearing a cast shoe until a follow-up with the doctor in three weeks. Even with the cast shoe it hurts if I walk very long, so I'm going to try to stay off of it. I planned to run a four-mile three-pint Guinness run next weekend, and the Rt. 66 half marathon the week after that. At least I hadn't signed up yet - I would be out $100. But I needed to run the Rt. 66 to qualify for the Pike's Peak half marathon next summer, so I'll have to put that one off for a year. The doctor said I could cycle if I was wearing stiff cycling shoes. But with winter coming (and the strong wind lately) I won't be able to do that on a regular basis. I guess I'll swim and maybe lift weights to try to keep in shape until this heals.
